It’s the little things that make life big, or in that specific case the little people, because any sort of interaction with them brings about BIG feelings. It was with that spirit in mind, that the Wildlife Club collaborated with the Bookworms Club on a ‘reading to kinder’ activity. This activity was organised to commemorate ‘World Sea Turtle Day’ which is celebrated worldwide on the 16th of June. The secondary girls shared the story of Sandy the sea turtle adapted from the book “A Journey through the Seychelles Waters” written by MCSS (Marine Conservation Society of Seychelles) with their attentive audience.
Imagine somebody taking your home away from you! Well this is what happened to Sandy and other sea creatures, its once crystal clear habitat had become a foggy dump yard, due to pollution and humans’ reckless behaviour.
We knew our job was done when the little ones started telling us about good practices, ‘you should throw your trash in the bin.’ They were even smart enough to tell us that if there are no bins in a place, then you should leave it in your bag, until you get home. The reading was followed up by a colouring activity, where they had to colour cut outs of sea turtles, something which they thoroughly enjoyed. One of them, even asked his mum to go back to school that evening, to collect his turtle which he had forgotten, ascertaining how big an impact this small activity had on our little learners!
We would like to thank everyone who collaborated with us on this project especially the students, Miss Roseline and Ms Debra.
